Official State Travel Web Site Showcases Culturally Rich Statewide Travel Destinations, Historic Sites, and Activities

CHICAGO – In honor of Black History Month, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity, Office of Tourism (DCEO/IOT) today announced an African American History & Heritage feature on enjoyillinois.com, the state’s official tourism Web site. The site highlights the culturally rich history of the state of Illinois through its diverse travel destinations, historical sites and engaging activities statewide.

“Black History Month provides an incredible opportunity to learn about the diverse achievements of African Americans, especially in Illinois,” said Illinois Office of Tourism Deputy Director Jan Kostner. “We hope that the new feature will inspire travelers of all backgrounds to explore the wealth of history and heritage in Illinois.”

Black History Month, a federally recognized celebration of African American accomplishments, has long acknowledged the impact Black Americans have had and continue to have on the American narrative. The feature was launched to coincide with the celebration of Black History Month, and will be a permanent section on enjoyIllinois.com.

Illinois is home to numerous traditional and non-traditional African-American history and cultural attractions visitors will find both inspirational and enjoyable. Attractions include everything from Chicago’s storied Bronzeville neighborhood to Peoria’s African-American Hall of Fame Museum to the Owen Lovejoy Homestead property located on the eastern edge of Princeton, one of the most important stations on the Underground Railroad in Illinois.
